For most of an hour on a Friday afternoon in April, a group of students at Makerere University did something that rarely happens in an online class. They stopped watching and started clicking.
The session, organized by the WordPress Meetup Kampala, ran from 4 to 5 p.m. I was there to facilitate, and my aim was simple: to introduce the fundamentals of WordPress in a way that felt hands-on, approachable and interactive.
It soon became more than a technical demonstration.
From the first click
The students began exploring almost at once. They opened menus, tested what they found, came across new features and traded ideas as we went. The questions kept coming, from the first click to the last.
I watched the group move from observing to acting. They worked with the platform with growing confidence and experimented as the hour went on. Even through a screen, I could feel the energy in the room.
Learning by doing
Digital skills are built by doing, not by watching, so I planned the session around practice. The students created content, found their way around the dashboard and discovered what else WordPress could do.
By the end, they knew their way around the platform and had the confidence to keep exploring on their own.
More than the software
The hour reminded me why sessions like this matter. Give learners a practical opportunity and curiosity starts to turn into capability. Confidence and creativity follow, and so does the wish to keep learning.
Teaching technology is not really about features or tools. It is about creating moments when people realize their own potential.
Sometimes all it takes is one hour and one opportunity.
